Project: An Art Deco Screen (Part 2)

I finished the screen and here you can see it in Heather's apartment. I still need to add a few things to decorate her walls, but I'm happy with what I've done so far.

Heather: Good morning Holly, what are you doing in this neighbourhood?

Holly: I just dropped by to invite you to the Christmas party we are having this year.

Heather: Well you best sit down and fill me in with all the details. Would you like a cup of tea, my dear?

Holly: Oh that would be lovely, thank you, I could really do with one right now.

Heather: So when and where is the party going to be held? Who's coming?

Holly: Well that's to be a surprise. You just need to be ready Christmas Eve, when the limousine will pick you up at eight o'clock sharp. All the gang will be there.

Heather: So are we expected to dress for the occasion or is it a more casual affair?

Holly: Of course my dear, in your very best finery. It's going to be the best Christmas party ever.

Heather: I can hardly wait, it sounds really intriguing and exciting.

Project: An Art Deco Screen (Part 1)

I felt Heather's apartment needed more furniture and after seeing these Peacock Panels over at Lorraine's website, I knew exactly what I wanted to make for the apartment next.

I purchased three panels, and a can of Rust-Oleum® Gold Glitter from Amazon. Once everything had arrived, I gave the panels a quick base coat, then sprayed them with several coats of gold glitter.

Here's a close up of the gold, but I must add they look much better in real life than these mediocre camera photos. The glitter is really shiny and makes a wonderful contrast with the black, of course it would also look lovely with the regal purple Heather's furniture is upholstered in.

I have yet to decide how I am going to mount these. In the beginning I was thinking of using black foam core, but decided against it as I don't like the cut edges. Then painted MDF and piano hinges came to mind, but attaching the hinges might be a problem. Perhaps I will simply use a heavy card instead . . . I wonder what colours can be had?

Art Deco Style

Originating in Paris at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes in 1925, it remained popular until the late 1930's. It focused on aesthetic and decoration rather than historical foundations.

The creative expression of some of the most memorable designers of the Art Deco era, from iconic fashion illustrators to glass and jewellery designers, to masters of Art Deco home and office interiors were: George Barbier, Paul Poiret, Erté, Georges Lepape, Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann, Sonia Delaunay, Jean Despres, René Lalique and Jean Dunand.

The Art Deco style is glamorous and eye-catching, it included various geometric designs, such as chevrons and bold stripes. It also favoured the use of animal prints, high-sheen fabrics in bold jewel-tone colours with gold accents and in this era of luxe, velvet reigned supreme.

Monotones were also popular, as shown in the photo below.

Other elements of this design style include bold artwork, marble, wall sconces, geometric mirrors, curved furniture and beautiful wood with gold metal inlays.

Many of these design elements are being revived and seen in homes today.

It was this style which inspired me to build two different 1:6 scale dioramas. The first being "The White Panther Jazz Club" which I made for my Integrity Toy dolls quite some time back, the one which is already being revived in the room box.

The other, is my recent "Erté Living Room" which I have only just begun working on. This diorama will feature the colours purple and gold with black and white neutrals.
