Project: Mid Century Diorama - Space Age 50's-70's (Part 2)

Mid century modern is a term first used by Cara Greenberg in the 1950's to describe a style of architectural, interior, industrial and graphic design that emerged after World War II.

Today mid century modern is often used to refer to the period from the early 1930's through the mid 70's. It has become a standard way of referring to design of the period that featured clean lines, a fusion of organic and manmade materials and retro style.

Teak timber and plastics, graphic shapes and vibrant colours were often used and the style remained popular until the 1980's, when design philosophies like the Memphis design school came into fashion.

My "Space Age" diorama is showcasing the wonderful plastic furniture produced in the late 1950's through to the late 60's.

In these last two shots you can see the recent additions to this diorama. The occupants have remained the same . . . still munching on cake!

Later, I will share a second mid century version which overlapped this period of design.

  1. It looks simply awsome! Love the colours (red is especially vibrant) and how cosy it looks even with this sci-fi vibes. And cookies and cake are dreamy :)!

    1. Thank you so much Chiriann. The red inside the ball chair was the inspiration for it's use throughout and with the curtains colours I think it tied it all together quite well.

  2. Groovy! Your girls have quite the life, sitting around all day in lovely settings and eating cake! Is your timber floor real wood, or does it just look like it?

    1. Ha ha ha! Yes they certainly do Barb, I am so enjoying these little ones. No the floor is not real wood, but I think this does a pretty good job of looking like it. I have a lighter version of the same, which I will use later on another diorama.

  3. The set up is wonderful. I am loving the furniture styles of that era. They just had this sleek, elegant design to them that I like and I think this style dates very well too. Your girls must be slow eaters! They are still eating their cake!

    1. Thank you Alasse, I love this furniture too, perhaps it's because my early career revolved around furniture. No, they are not slow eaters, they just eat a lot of cake and cookies. LOL!
